NEWS RELEASE

February 9th, 2026

Scioto County Sheriff David Thoroughman stated that his 911 Communication Center received a call on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at 6:04 a.m., from a concerned neighbor stating that a male was outside in the roadway shooting a gun.

Sheriff Thoroughman stated that deputies responded to 2466 Pollock Road, McDermott, Ohio. Sheriff Thoroughman stated that upon deputy’s arrival, they had learned that a neighbor had already taken the gun away from the male and had him inside of the house trying to keep him calm. The suspect advised that he had shot somebody that was breaking into his house and that they were up by the pond. As a result of this statement, a detective responded to process evidence and begin an in-depth investigation.

A search of the scene revealed no indications that any other person had been on the property or had been shot. Video evidence showing parts of this incident was located. It was learned that the male was under the influence of drugs and that the male’s claims that he had shot someone who was breaking into his house was unfounded. The detective located a post on social media

that was posted prior to the shooting. In the social media post the suspect stated that he was going to shoot up his step father’s house because the two had a verbal altercation.

Arrested was Kyle D. Mays, age 22, of 2466 Pollock Road, McDermott, Ohio. Mays has been charged with Having Weapons While Under Disability, a felony of the 3 rd degree, Discharging a Firearm Near a Prohibited Area (Roadway), a felony of the 2 nd degree, and two counts of Improperly Discharging a Firearm at or into a Habitation, a felony of the 2 nd degree. Mays is being held on a $70,000.00 bond and will appear in Portsmouth Municipal Court on Monday, February 9, 2026.

This is still an ongoing investigation, that could result in more charges being presented to the Scioto County Grand Jury on a later date. Anyone with information should contact Detective Sergeant Jodi Conkel @ 740-351-1091.
