NEWS RELEASE

April 29, 2025

Scioto County Sheriff David Thoroughman stated on April 28, 2025, at 7:20 a.m., the 911 Communications Center received a call of threats being made to individuals at a residence on Wolf Run Rd. in West Portsmouth. While deputies were responding to the home, the callers called back and advised that a silver Acura pulled in front of their home and the occupants were making threats, and one of the occupants fired a shot from inside the vehicle towards their home.

Deputies responded to the residence and began to look for the suspect vehicle, and a BOLO was given to surrounding agencies. Detectives responded to the residence to process the crime scene.

The suspect vehicle was located shortly after the incident in a parking lot at Kendall Heights Apartments in Portsmouth. Detectives responded to the vehicle location. The suspects were believed to be staying in one of the apartments. Once a possible location of the suspects was obtained, Scioto County Sheriff’s Office detectives, deputies, as well as officers from the Portsmouth Police Department, contacted four individuals inside an apartment. The individuals were detained and brought to the Sheriff’s Office for questioning. Evidence related to the shooting was obtained from the apartment.

As a result of the investigation, two individuals were arrested.

Arrested was Ashton G. Goodman, age 20, of 430 Baker Dr, Newark, Ohio. Also arrested was a male juvenile. Both have been charged with one count of Improperly Discharging a Firearm at or into a Habitation, a felony of the 2 nd degree, and one count of Improperly Handling Firearms in a Motor Vehicle, a felony of the 4th degree. Goodman appeared in Portsmouth Municipal Court on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, and is being held on a $25,000 bond. The male juvenile is currently being held at the Ross County Juvenile Detention Center.

Sheriff Thoroughman would like to thank the Portsmouth Police Department and PMHA Security for their assistance in this case.

Sheriff Thoroughman stated this is still an ongoing investigation that could result in more charges being presented to the Scioto County Grand Jury at a later date.

Anyone with information should contact Detective Donald Tackett-Dye at (740) 351-1099.

This is terrifying—so glad no one was hurt. Sounds like the Sheriff's Office and Portsmouth PD moved quickly and handled it well. Makes me think about how fast things can escalate, like in the old Snake Game—one wrong move, and suddenly everything spirals out of control. Hope the investigation wraps up safely and justice is served.

This incident reminds us that violence can happen at any time, affecting everyone's safety so we must be very careful. Instead, why don't we build peace from playing geometry dash spam with each other.
